ACCESS SPACE
I’m James Wallbank I’m one of the people who run
access space. Access space is an open access centre where you can come and
learn about the internet where you can do all sorts of exciting creative things
online.
What makes Access Space really different is it costs nothing, the hardware
and software costs absolutely nothing, its completely legal. We think this
is really exciting so if people come in and learn all sorts of creative things;
make websites, make graphics, make music, then when they walk out of the door
they don’t have to rely upon us instead they can find their own computers
and we can give them the software, totally legal and then they can role out
to their friends, it’s a very exciting model.
We run things on recycled computers and we use them in conjunction with free
open source software. We are actually the first Open Access media centre to
take on board this and we are also the longest running.
When people come in they see all the computers connected to the internet,
but it’s not just all about surfing, it’s about getting creative,
we want them to start to produce, find their own voice online and there’s
all sorts of software to do amazing creative things.
As long as some people got some creative productive project to do, we say
yes get on with it and you can ask anyone in the space for help, there’s
only one catch, people are going to start and ask you for help and that’s
what we ask of people, you must.
